Abstract

This professional society of educators, industrial and government research workers, and students of physics and related fields, was established in 1899 to promote the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics. It was a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics.

1899 – 1903The "Bulletin of the American Physical Society" published reports and abstracts of American Physical Society (APS) meetings.

May 20, 1899First meeting held by 36 physicists in Fayerweather Hall, Columbia University. The meeting was organized by Arthur G. Webster and attendees included Marcia Keith and Isabelle Stone, New York (N.Y.).

1913APS took over operation of the "Physical Review." The journal had previously been based out of Cornell University. Under APS, the journal has been subdivided into sections A, B, C, D, E, and X.

1929"Reviews of Modern Physics" debuts.

1931Became a founding member of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) when it was formed by the Optical Society of America (OSA), the American Physical Society (APS), the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), the Society of Rheology (SoR), and the American Association for Physics Teachers (AAPT).

December 1931Joint meeting with the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) held in New Orleans. This was the first annual meeting of the AAPT.

1943Division of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics organized.

1944Division of Polymer Physics organized.

1947Division of Solid State Physics organized.

1948Gifts of wartime and postwar back issues of the "Physical Review" and "Reviews of Modern Physics" sent to German and Japanese universities.

1952Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize established.

1958"Physical Review Letters" debuts after Samuel Goudsmit, editor of the "Physical Review", began collecting letters to the editor for a standalone journal.

1959Division of Plasma Physics organized.

1959Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics established with the American Institute of Physics (AIP).

1960Polymer Physics Prize established.

1964Irving Langmuir Prize in Chemical Physics established.

1964Tom W. Bonner Prize in Nuclear Physics established.
