1931 – 1932Five founding Member Societies: American Physical Society (APS), Optical Society of America (OSA), Acoustical Society of America (ASA), Society of Rheology (SOR), and American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT).
February 27, 1931American Physical Society (APS), Optical Society of America (OSA), and Acoustical Society of America (ASA) formed joint committee and met at Columbia University. Based on this meeting the Societies agreed to establish the American Institute of Physics (AIP), New York (N.Y.).
May 3, 1931First Governing Board meeting held at the Cosmos Club and considered founding date, K. T. Compton elected Chair and George Pegram elected Secretary, Washington (D.C.).
September 10, 1931Next Governing Board meeting where it was announced the Chemical Foundation would defray expenses for the first year and the Board adopted a resolution for page charges for the Physical Review with support from the Rockefeller Foundation.
October 1, 1931Opened an office at 654 Madison Ave, New York City, in a room at the Chemical Foundation, New York (N.Y.).
1932Office was relocated to an empty loft at 11 East 38th Street, New York (N.Y.).
June 1, 1932Certificate of incorporation was signed by a judge of the Supreme Court and filed in the office of the Secretary of State.
November 1932Governing Board resolved that each of the Member Societies will be billed annually on the basis of the cost of production of the journal(s) of the Societies plus pro rate overhead, plus a pro-rated charge to cover the cost of non-publication activities.
1933The Journal of Chemical Physics (JCP) first published.
1936Purchased its own offices in the Flatiron building at the intersectin of Broadway and 5th Avenue, New York (N.Y.).

1957Visiting Scientist Program is organized by William Kelly and Grant Gale as part of educational development programs.
