The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) is a not-for-profit membership organizational whose purpose is to promote the application of physics to medicine and biology, to encourage interest and training in medical physics and related fields, and to prepare and to disseminate technical information in medical physics and related fields.

November 17, 1958American Association of Physicists in Medicine was founded by physicists prior to the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), Chicago (Ill.).
1962Established an affiliation with the United States National Committee on Medical Physics, under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences.
1963Scientific Committee on Radiation Dosimetry created.
1964"Physics in Medicine and Biology" became the official journal created jointly with the Hospital Physicists Association (HPA).
1965The society was incorporated.
1966Became an affiliated society of the American Institute of Physics (AIP).
1967"Quarterly Bulletin" was created as the newsletter of the society.
August 4, 1969 – August 9, 1969First sponsored Summer School on radiation dosimetry in Burlington, Vermont.
July 13, 1970 – July 15, 1970First independent annual meeting, Washington (D.C.).
1972Coolidge Award established for meritorious work in medical physics.
March 1972First joint scientific symposium with the American Physical Society (APS), Atlantic City (N.J.).
1973Became a Member Society of the American Institute of Physics (AIP).
1973 – 1974Education and Professional Councils were proposed and adopted.
1974Publications Committee established.
1974"Medical Physics" launched as the sole journal of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM).
1976Executive Office created.
1976"Newsletter" replaced "Quarterly Bulletin" and issued six issues a year.
1980Headquarter operations were moved to the American Institute of Physics (AIP) offices, New York (N.Y.).
1983Twenty-fifth anniversary of the society, New York (N.Y.).
1984First Inter-American Meeting of Medical Physics.
1987Membership category of Fellows introduced.
1989Marvin M. D. Williams Professional Achievement Award established for an eminent career in medical physics with an emphasis on clinical medical physics.
1989Scholarship program for medical physics trainees established.
1994"Medical Physics" began being published on a monthly schedule.
1994Board of Trustees of the American Board of Radiology (ABR) voted to make the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) a full sponsor.
1994Moved their headquarters along with the American Institute of Physics (AIP) to the American Center for Physics (ACP), College Park (Md.).
1996Edith H. Quimby Lifetime Achievement Award established for members whose careers have been notable based on their outstanding achievements.
1997Board of Directors changed to a 15-member board.
2000Purchased the "Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics" from the American College of Medical Physics (ACMP).
2008Fiftieth anniversary of the society.
2015Moved to their headquarters to their current location, Alexandria (Va.).
