Institutional History

Abstract

Though there was physics at Cornell University prior to 1872, the Department of Physics began in earnest when William Anthony joined the faculty. Cornell's Physics Department is known for its Nobel Prize winning work in low-temperature physics and theoretical astrophysics. It has over 40 active professors and research is overseen by its two component organizations: the Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics and the Laboratory for Elementary-Particle Physics.
