Biography

Abstract

Kip Thorne is Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics Emeritus at California Institute of Technology (2009-present). Thorne's research has focused on Einstein's general theory of relativity and on astrophysics, with emphasis on relativistic stars, black holes and especially gravitational waves. With R. Weiss and R. W. P. Drever, Thorne co-founded the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory) Project, where gravitational waves were first detected in September 2015.
