Abstract

This professional society of teachers of physics in colleges, universities, and secondary schools, was established in 1930 to advance the teaching of physics and further the appreciation of the role of physics in society and culture. It was a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics.

December 29, 1930Luncheon that included Homer Dodge, Paul Klopsteg and Floyd K. Richtmyer that was the beginning of AAPT, Cleveland (Ohio).

April 29, 1931AAPT Executive Committee met in Washington, D. C. and in affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) was authorized and plans were made for the first annual meeting.

December 1931First annual meeting held in New Orleans with American Physical Society (APS) and AAAS, New Orleans (La.).

February 1932Became a founding member of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) when it was formed by the Optical Society of America (OSA), the American Physical Society (APS), the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), the Society of Rheology (SoR), and the American Association for Physics Teachers (AAPT).

December 30, 1932First chapter recognized by AAPT was the Association of Physics Teachers of Western Pennsylvania and Environs.

January 1933Two chapters were organized in Kentucky and Oregon.

February 1933First issue of "The American Physics Teacher" published under editor Duane Roller.

December 1934Anonymous donor, later revealed to be Paul Klopsteg, offered to finance an annual award for notable contributions to the teaching of physics, named the Oersted medal.

December 1936First Oersted medal awarded posthumously to William S. Franklin.

January 1940First annual Richtmyer Memorial Lecture is given.

February 1940"The American Physics Teacher" changes name to the "American Journal of Physics.".

January 1943First official winter meeting sponsored by AAPT alone.

1950First official summer meeting sponsored by AAPT alone.

January 1952Distinguished Service Citations were initiated.

January 1957Corporation papers were drawn up for AAPT.

January 1957Visiting Scientist Program for both colleges and high schools started with National Science Foundation (NSF) support and was done jointly with the Education Division of the AIP.

January 1959First Directory of Physics, Astronomy & Geophysics Staff was published in conjunction with AIP.

1960 – 1965The Physics Teacher journal is begun.

January 1960Commission on College Physics (CCP) began with a grant from NSF and done in conjunction with AIP.

January 1962AAPT established an Executive Office.

January 26, 1963Millikan Lecture Award is established. The awardee gives a lecture at the Summer meeting and should be selected for their notable and creative contributions to the teaching of physics.

October 1981Melba Newell Phillips Award is established. This is only given out occassionally to subsequent AAPT leaders who display similar achievements and exceptional contributions.

January 1986Executive Board voted to sponsor participation in its first team of U. S. high school students in the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO).

January 1990Paul Klopsteg Lectureship is established. A feature of the Summer meeting, is on a topic of current significance that is of general interest and at a level suitable for a nonspecialist audience.

January 1993Pre-College Physics Education Award and the Introductory Undergraduate Award to recognize contributions to physics teaching at the pre-college and college levels respectively is established.

December 1995 – November 22, 1997Campaign for Physics, joint effort with American Physical Society (APS), was designed to raise funds to support educational activities of the two societies and reached its $5 million goal.

August 1997Physical Science Resource Center (PSRC) is launched. It provides resources and links to resources for the entire spectrum of physics and physical science teachers, grades K-16.

January 1999First electronic version of the "American Journal of Physics" is available on the web.

January 2003First electronic version of "The Physics Teacher" is available on the web.
