Abstract

The department was founded in 1893 by A. A. Michelson and has made major contributions to 20th century science. These include Robert Millikan's oil-drop experiment in 1909, it served as a main site for the Manhattan Project in the 1940s, the Miller-Urey experiment, considered to be the classic experiment on the origin of life, and the development of Agent Orange among others.
