Abstract

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was founded on October 1, 1958 to "research into the problems of flight within and outside the Earth's atmosphere, and for other purposes." Project Mercury (1958-1963) was NASA's first high-profile program involving human spaceflight. Project Gemini (1965-1966) sent two astronauts into space at a time to practice space operations. Project Apollo (1961-1975) was tasked with exploring the moon. In 1981, NASA began to use space shuttles, which could take-off vertically and glide to an unpowered airplane-like landing. NASA has also launched a series of probes and satellites to explore the Moon, the planets, and other areas of the solar system. In the field of aeronautics, NASA's X-15 program of the 1960s involved a rocket-powered airplane that flew above the atmosphere and then glided back to Earth unpowered, giving researchers useful information about supersonic aeronautics. NASA researchers have also studied flight maneuverability on high-speed aircraft.
