Institutional History

Abstract

The research interests of the University of Rochester Department of Physics and Astronomy are diverse and range from subatomic particles to galaxy clusters. It is internationally recognized in almost all major subfields of physics and astronomy and include astrophysics, quantum optics, biological physics, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, and laser physics.

Important Dates

1850University of Rochester was founded, Rochester (N.Y.).

1929 – 1961Institute of Applied Optics was founded and was then made part of the College of Engineering.

1934 – 1946Lee Dubridge was on faculty.

1935Department awarded its first three PhD degrees.

1935 – 1937Frederick Seitz was on faculty.

1937 – 1945Victor Weisskopf was on faculty.

1939 – 1970Robert Marshak was on faculty.

1942 – 1943Herbert York was on faculty.

1948The new 130" cyclotron began operation.

1950Held the first Annual Rochester Conference on High Energy Nuclear Physics.

1950 – 1951Kenneth Case was on faculty.

1952 – 1954D. Allan Bromley was on faculty.

1954The cyclotron was rebuilt as the world's first variable-energy cyclotron.

1957The Physics Department became the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

1964 – 2001Leonard Mandel was on faculty.

1966 – 1981Elliott Montroll was on faculty.
