Hear an excerpt from Ernest O. Lawrence's talk on "High Energy Physics" given as the Silliman Lecture at Yale University on October 15, 1947:
"Long before the discovery of the fission process, the vast extent of nuclear energy was recognized and, therefore, the importance of producing much higher energy particles in the laboratory. And so, almost ten years ago, plans were laid to build a giant cyclotron. One as large as practicable, both financially and otherwise. And with the hope that such a great instrument would produce particles of the next higher order of magnitude of energy - hundreds, rather than tens, of millions of electron volts."
