1895Robert Millikan received first Ph.D. in physics.

May 1899American Physical Society was founded at Columbia.

1900 – 1958George Pegram was on faculty, was Dean of the Graduate School and Vice President.

1903 – 1958Bergen Davis was on faculty.

1904Earnest Kempton Adams (EKA) Fund established enabling the department to invite distinguished scientists to Morningside.

1905 – 1906H. A. Lorentz appointed EKA lecturer and wrote one of his most important works, "The Theory of Electrons.".

1909Max Planck appointed EKA lecturer.

1925Pupin Laboratory completed to serve as home of the department. Named in 1935 after Michael Pupin.

1929 – 1988I. I. Rabi was on faculty.

1931Heavy hydrogen was discovered by Harold Clayton Urey. Marked the first important work done in the new Pupin Laboratory.
