Abstract
In 2008, the United States Department of Energy renamed the facility the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory where "SLAC" has no explicit meaning. SLAC's scientific mission has diversified from its original focus on particle physics and accelerator science to include cosmology, materials and environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, and alternative energy.
