The University of Colorado Boulder's Department of Physics hired its first physics professor, William Waggener, in 1885. It established the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA) with the National Bureau of Standard sin 1962 and now ranks among the top ten physics departments at public universities.
