Abstract

Argonne National Laboratory is located in Lemont, Illinois, and is operated by the U.S. Department of Energy. The Laboratory was founded in 1946 and is one of the nation's leading energy research centers. It develops and assesses nuclear and alternative energy technologies and conducts a wide range of fundamental and applied research in the physical, environmental, and biomedical sciences

December 20, 1951Experimental Breeder Reactor-I lit a string of four lightbulbs with the world's first usable electricity from nuclear energy.

1953Helped pioneer early computing research and built the AVIDAC.

1954Elements einsteinium and fermium were co-discovered by Argonne scientists.

1960Argonne scientist helped create the science behind molecular dynamics.

1962Created the first simple compound of xenon by combining it with fluoride.
