Physicist on the staff of Brookhaven National Laboratory from 1949; Department Chair of High Energy Physics (1960-1964), Assistant Director (1964-1966), Associate Director from 1966. Cool established an experimental physics group at Rockefeller University in 1970 to plan experiments conducted at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), where he also did research. In later years, he investigated the detailed properties of the strong force that binds together quarks.
