April 29, 1929Preliminary meeting called to coincide with the meeting of the American Chemical Society to formally organize the Society of Rheology, Columbus (Ohio).
October 1929"Journal of Rheology" first published.
December 19, 1929Society of Rheology was formed and first meeting was held at the National Bureau of Standards, Washington (D.C.).
1931Became a founding member of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) when it was formed by the Optical Society of America (OSA), the American Physical Society (APS), the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), the Society of Rheology (SoR), and the American Association for Physics Teachers (AAPT).
1933"Journal of Rheology" and the American Physical Society (APS)'s "Physics" joined and later changed name to "Applied Physics.".
1948Bingham Medal established to a member of The Society who has made an outstanding contribution to the science of rheology.
1957"Journal of Rheology" was again published separately first under the name "Transactions of The Society of Rheology.".
1985Distinguished Serve Award established to recognize exceptional service to The Society and is awarded at the discretion of the Executive Committee.
1994Journal of Rheology Publicaton Award established give for the best paper published in "Journal of Rheology" during the preceding two years for special recognition.
2001Best Student Poster Award established to a student selected by a panel of judges at the Poster Session of the Annual Meeting.
2009Best Postdoctoral Fellow Poster Award established to encourage post-doctoral presentations and participation in the meeting and to recognize excellence.
2009Arthur B. Metzner Early Career Award established for a member of The Society who is younger than 35 and has distinguished themselves in rheological research, rheological practice, or service to rheology.
