J.J. Thomson experimenting. While Thomson was head of
the Cavendish, Cambridge University began to admit postgraduate
students who had not been Cambridge undergraduates. The influx
of young physicists from around the world contributed greatly
to the vitality of the experimental activities that Thomson
supervised.
