Renamed in 1961 when it became part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system. In 1969 the College was poised to begin construction on its long needed science building and soon would welcome Robert E. Marshak, a physicist of international reputation as its president (1970-1979). The university continues to reflect a tradition of scientific excellence with faculty members of the National Academies of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering, fellows of the American Physical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The department sponsors research in biophysics, high-energy physics, condensed matter and soft-condensed matter physics, ultrafast spectroscopy and photonics among others.
1961Department was renamed when the university became part of the newly established City University of New York (CUNY), New York (N.Y.).
