Lawrence E. Nielsen was awarded the Bingham Medal of the Society of Rheology in 1976. Nielsen spent most of life researching the relationship between the mechanical properties of high polymers and composite materials to their molecular and colloidal structure. Later in life, he tried to combine his love for the outdoors and his rheological studies through the analyzing the flow properties of glaciers.
