Rotation of a Spiral Nebula

Purported rotation of a spiral nebula, making it seem it must be nearby. The arrows in this 1916 photograph (below) of the spiral nebula M101 indicate the direction and magnitude of the motions that Adriaan van Maanen claimed to have measured from a comparison of plates taken several years apart. Comparison stars are enclosed in circles.
