Charles R. Cross papers, 1855-1913.
The collection includes correspondence with Elihu Thomson and others, photographs, and newspaper clippings about scientific instrumentation and early application of and experiments with the x-ray process, Cross's copy of Courses of Instruction (MIT) 1866-1893, and 3 volumes of lecture notes Cross took from lectures given by Prof. Edward Pickering in physics in 1866; and a volume of notes taken by William R. Cross from a lecture on physics given by Professor John Foster of Union College in the 1850s.
Charles Robert Cross, 1848-1921, S.B. 1870, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, taught in the physics department at MIT, 1870-1917; he became professor emeritus in 1917. In 1882 he instituted the first course in electrical engineering in the United States as part of the course in physics at MIT; later he became head of the Institute's physics department and directed the MIT Rogers Laboratory of Physics. His research included work in telephony.
