Paul E. Klopsteg papers, 1905-1991.
The papers are organized in ten categories. The biographical files include calendars and diaries, clippings, and an interview dealing with his activities in the American Association of Physics Teachers. Education files include copies of his master's and Ph.D theses, laboratory reports, seminar papers. The correspondence deals with Klopsteg's business, consulting, academic, and family interests, including a substantial folder of correspondence with Erle Stanley Gardner on his procedures as an author. Archery files include materials for articles, speeches, and a substantial folder of correspondence with Erle Stanley Garner, and four folders of correspondence with A. J. Costner about archery and his work with the Pima Indians, and clippings pertaining to "Little Joe," the secret bow-pistol Klopsteg designed during World War II. The governmental organizations files are thin, but document his work in artificial limb research. The professional organizations files document his involvement in leadership roles in the American Assn. of Physics Teachers, the Physical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Religion files include correspondence, clippings and articles by Klopsteg on how a physicist views God. The World War I files relate to his work on the chronograph which he developed in 1918 for studying projectile velocities. The World War II files document his work with the Office of Scientific Research and Development in the South Pacific, and include correspondence, a diary and his Medal of Merit Citation. The 1996 addition included reports of the Advisory Committee on Weather Control (1953) of which Klopsteg was chairman, and his speech "Science and government, and government in science."
Paul E. Klopsteg (1889-1991). Physicist. Professor of physics, University of Minnesota, 1911-1917; Leeds & Northrup Co, 1918-1921; Central Scientific Co, 1921-1944; professor of physics and director of research, Northwestern University Technological Institute, 1944-1961. He was active in numerous professional organizations and founded the American Association of Physics Teachers, and was active in the American Institute of Physics. His avocation was archery about which he wrote two books and many articles.
