A pioneer in magnetic recording, underwater acoustics, and telecommunications, Begun designed the first magnetic tape recorder for use by the German Broadcasting System before emigrating to the United States in 1935. In 1938, Begun joined the Brush Development Company, where he received many patents for various aspects of magnetic tape recording. During WWII, Begun served as a member of the National Defense Research Committee. After the war, Begun returned to the Brush Development Company, its successor Clevite Corporation, retiring from its successor, Gould, Incorporated, in 1970 to establish Auctor Associates, Inc., a management consulting firm.
