Family background and childhood interest in astronomy. Further stimulations through study with Jacobus C. Kapteyn at University of Groningen, 1917-1921. Early work with Kapteyn and Bertil Lindblad, leading to postdoctoral work at Yale University, 1922-1923. Return to University of Leiden, 1924; discussion of stellar research.
