Waugh, David F.
David F. Waugh papers, 1932-1989.
Waugh's teaching activities are documented in course notes for classes he taught at MIT, Photosynthesis (7.06) and Physical Chemistry Macromolecules (7.50). His research is recorded in a sequence of laboratory notebooks he compiled with students and research assistants (1942-1978) during studies of milk and blood coagulation and the development of tests for active insulin. There are also grant reports to the National Institutes of Health and correspondence about the licensing of his patents for water soluble casein, methods for preparing insulin, and collagen particles. Also included are Waugh's editorial comments as a referee for professional papers, letters of recommendation for students and colleagues, and songs and poetry by the Department of Biology graduate students. There are reprints of his articles (1966-1985), abstracts of papers (1939-1969), and data and manuscript material relating to his final work, a postumously published paper on blood clotting.
David Floyd Waugh, 1915-1984, A.B. in zoology, 1935; Ph.D. in physiology, 1940, Washington University, joined the faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1941 as assistant professor of physical biology. He became associate professor in 1947 and was professor of biophysics from 1954 to 1984. He served on numerous committees and panels of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Research Council, and the National Institutes of Health. The focus of his research was on the chemical and physical processes involved in the interaction of protein molecules, blood coagulation and hemostasis, the formation and structure of micelles, and the chemistry of insulin. He developed a quick and accurate test for active insulin and a method of synthesis which increased insulin production.
