The collection best documents Szilard's work on the atomic bomb and his efforts on behalf of global cooperation and arms control, with most materials dating from the late 1930s to the early 1960s.|bEarlier materials include patents, personal documents, and letters. Prominent correspondents include Albert Einstein, Enrico Fermi, J. William Fulbright, Otto Hahn, Hubert Humphrey, Frďřic Joliot-Curie, Linus Pauling, Michael Polyani, Jonas Salk, Edward Teller, Harold C. Urey, and Eugene P. Wigner. Includes incoming and copies of outgoing correspondence. Accession processed in 2000 includes additional correspondence with J.F. Kennedy, N. Khruschev, and Gertrude Szilard. The accession also contains copies of articles about Szilard and other memorabilia.
Physicist. Szilard (1898-1964) attended Budapest Institute of Technology; Dr. Phil., University of Berlin, 1922; unmarried came to U.S., 1937, naturalized, 1943. Member teaching staff University of Berlin, 1925-1932; research work in nuclear physics, St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London and Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford, England, 1935-1938; worked on atomic energy, Columbia, 1939-1942; with Metallurgy Laboratory, University of Chicago, 1942-1946, 1946-1964, Professor University of Chicago (proved possibility of self-susstaining nuclear-fission (with Walter Zinn), 1939; worked out amount, configuration and control of uranium (with Enrico Fermi) and directed first nuclear chain reaction, 1942; research in molecular biology from 1946.
