In this interview Gilbert Lee talks about the creation of Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy in 1957 and 1958 and the difficulty he experienced in setting up the administration of the program as it transitioned from being run by the University of Michigan to a self-sufficient, federally funded project. October 28, 1957 was the incorporation date of AURA. Kitt Peak in Arizona was dedicated as their observatory site on March 15, 1960. Lee also talks about various trips to South America in the nineteen sixties and nineteen seventies to evaluate sites for another observatory.
