University of Wyoming Department of Geology and Geophysics records, 1881-1972
The collection contains materials relating to the Wyoming State Geologist and the operations and teaching of the department. The State Geologist records include extensive letterpress copybooks and correspondence, 1901-1929; topics include: the "Geological Survey of Wyoming Bulletin" and oil well inspections. Some of the correspondence is with Val B. Maghee, an oil and gas inspector. The departmental records include subject files, reports and publications by department members, and a slide projector. Also included are records of a trial concerning oil rights between Al Mountford and University of Wyoming faculty member A. C. Boyle.
The Geology Department began at University of Wyoming in 1887. The summer science camp was instituted in 1925. The State Geologist position was added to the Geology Department in 1933. The first Ph.D. from the Geology Department was awarded in 1953. The Geology Department worked with the state of Wyoming to find more efficient means to produce the state's natural resources.
