University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Coordinated Science Laboratory
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Coordinated Science Laboratory records, 1953-.
This collection consists of three series. The annual reports (1967-) describe accomplishments, interdisciplinary cooperation, plans, publications, graduate work and contract and grant research, and include the annual "Research in the Coordinated Science Laboratory" from the Summary of Engineering Research. The series "Some Historical Highlights" (1964, 1967) is a duplicated history of the development of the Coordinated Science Laboratory, including a narrative account of its origin as the Control Systems Laboratory in 1951, its contributions to military systems, reorganization into an interdisciplinary graduate research center in 1959, significant research accomplishments (electric vacuum gyroscope, surface and vacuum physics, computers, control systems and switching theory), financial support, and a building dedication program symposium program review (1967). The technical reports (1953-1968, 1978-1980, 1985, 1990-) describe research done under contracts between the Coordinated Science Laboratory and federal agencies concerning topics including human performance in information transmission (1955; 1959) and the teaching machine PLATO II (1961).
Established in 1951, the Coordinated Sciences Laboratory is devoted to pure and applied research in engineering, electronics, communications, aerospace studies, and other fields. It provides an interdisciplinary research environment to stimulate interaction among faculty and students from engineering sciences and other areas. It has facilities for materials processing including electron beam welding, inert gas brazing and glass blowing. Prior to 1959 it was the Control Systems Laboratory and worked on classified military research.
