Oral history interview with Brian Schmidt, 2007 July 24 and 25.
In this interview, Brian Schmidt discusses his studies as an undergraduate at the University of Arizona, where he worked on discovering supernovae with the CCD Transit Instrument under John McGraw. He continues with his graduate studies in astronomy at Harvard University, with Robert Kirshner as his thesis advisor, from 1989-1993. His staying at Harvard as a postdoctoral fellow before moving to the Australian National University in 1995. He discusses when he atteneded a summer school in Les Houches, France, in 1990, on Supernovae !a where he met many of the supernova greats and marks this as his induction into supernova astronomy. How at the age of 27 in 1994, he started the High-z Supernova Search Team; how he wrote the supernova search software, much of the simulation software, as well as one of several cosmological fitting software used by the team led them to their 1998 discovery of the accelerating universe. He also discusses the spaces of scientific work, supernovae as scientific objects, and scientific visualization.
(1967- ): MA (1992) and PhD (1993) from Harvard University; postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (1993-1994); jointly led the study for the High-z Supernova Search Team, which first reported evidence that the Universe's expansion rate is now accelerating through monitoring of Type 1a Supernova; distinguished professor, Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow and astrophysicist at the Australian National University Mount Stromlo Observatory. In 2011, won the Nobel Prize in physics along with Saul Permutter and Adam G. Riess for "the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe through observations of distant supernovae".
