The collection contains course notes, problem sets, quizzes, and lab projects from classes Norton taught in X-ray Metallography (3.50) and Materials Science II (3.51), 1950-1964. Also includes correspondence about consulting work, and writings about metallurgy and x-ray metallurgy.
John T. Norton, 1898-1989, S.B. in physics, 1918, Sc.D. 1932, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Research associate (1920-1926), assistant professor of physics (1926 ); associate professor of metallurgy (1930 ), professor of the physics of metals (1941), head of Radiographic Laboratory (World War II), chairman of the faculty (1956-1958), acting dean of the graduate school (1961). Co-founded AMRAY, Inc., in Bedford, Mass., which manufactured scientific instruments. Research in the application of physical methods, particularly x-ray techniques, to the study of the science of metals. Norton's father, Charles L. Norton, was a member of the MIT physics faculty from 1893 to 1939; his brother, Frederick H. Norton, was a faculty member in the MIT Department of Physics, 1923-1931, and in the Department of Metallurgy, 1933-1962.
