Morrison, Philip
Philip Morrison papers, 1934-2005.
Records documenting Morrison's education include his student notes in theoretical physics from classes at the University of California, Berkeley, in the 1930s, and notes from lectures given by J. Robert Oppenheimer and Niels Bohr. Information about Morrison's interest in teaching physics and science include correspondence and reports about his work with the Commission on College Physics, and two projects for Educational Services, Inc., the African Elementary Education Project, and the Physical Science Study Committee to modernize elementary and college level physics curricula. Morrison's interests in studying astronomical questions to search for the nature of elementary particles is reflected in his notes, reports, papers, and correspondence on cosmic rays and neutrinos. Correspondence and reports also document Morrison's support for nuclear disarmament and civil rights organizations in the 1940s and 1950s.
American physicist (1915-2005). Ph.D., theoretical physics (University of California at Berkeley, 1940). University of Chicago Metallurgical Laboratory, 1943; group leader, Los Alamos Laboratory (1944-1946); faculty, Cornell University (1946-1964); Massachusetts Institute of Technology, professor (1965- ). Morrison actively opposed development of nuclear weapons and was a proponent of physics and higher education worldwide. Research in theoretical physics, astrophysics, cosmology, interstellar communications, and the origins of life.
Morrison is co-author of several physics textbooks, including Introductory Nuclear Theory and the Physical Science Study Committee's Physics; and the author of many works for both popular and professional publications.
