Argonne Universities Association
Argonne Universities Association records, 1945-1982.
Includes records of the Argonne Universities Association (1965-1982) and its predecessors, Associated Midwest Universities (1958-1968) and Council of Participating Institutions (1946-1958) relating to the use of Argonne National Laboratory (1947-1982) by thirty research-oriented universities. Funded by the federal Atomic Energy Commission/Department of Energy, Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) was operated by the University of Chicago and managed by the Argonne Universities Association under a Tripartite Contract (1965-1982). The archives include correspondence, minutes, reports, publications, photographs, statements and financial records relating to nuclear reactor development; personnel serving on review and special committees; membership; review committees for ANL divisions and programs; research and development in high-energy physics; biomedical, energy and environmental research; institutional interaction; and the operation of the experimental breeder reactor (1951- ), zero gradient synchrotron (1957- ) and intense pulsed neutron source facility (1976- ). The archives also contain material on accelerators, public policy, other national laboratories, institutional cooperation, nuclear engineering education (1955-1982), reactor analysis and safety (1978-1980), high-voltage electron microscopy (1977-1982), magnetohydrodynamics (1979-1982) and research in solid-state science (1961-1982), radiological physics (1964-1978), metallurgy (1965-1969), materials science (1968-1982), computer science (1969-1979), applied mathematics (1978-1982) and fusion (1979-1982).
Associated Midwest Universities (formed 1958) grew out of Council of Participating Institutions, which was associated with Argonne National Laboratory; its successor, Argonne Universities Association, was formed in 1966 by 26 universities to manage Argonne National Laboratory (Lemont, Ill.).
