The collection consists of correspondence, speeches, reports, minutes, proceedings, agendas, programs, lists, notes, memorada, statements, questionnaires, press releases, directories, leaflets, fliers, photos, bibliographies, and order blank, relating to the Chicago Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy, the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy, the Turn Toward Peace Committee, other peace organizations, views of congressmen and presidential candidates in 1964, disarmament, arms control, Vietnam, ratification of the nuclear test ban treaty, radiation, the activities of the United States Arms Control and Disarmament Agency and of the American Friends Service Committee throughout the world, and related activities, organizations, conferences, and subjects.
The National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy began in 1957 as an ad hoc effort designed to stimulate debate on the pros and cons of the nuclear age, especially the perils of nuclear testing. Local groups, such as the Chicago chapter also founded in 1957, were organized to implement the national program, hold rallies, engage in workshops and peace marches, and establish communication with political and civic leaders, as well as with local residents.
