A. M. Tyndall papers, 1900-1961.
Included is an unpublished history of the Department of Physics in Bristol, 1876-1948 written by Tyndall, as well as his notes and papers, correspondence, speeches and addresses. An item of note is a remarkable scrapbook compiled by him covering the whole history of the laboratory from its conception until the 1950s. This includes original correspondence pertinent to the development of physics at Bristol, such as that between Tyndall and H.H. Wills who provided the original capital, as well as photographs and any press clippings in local and national papers which Tyndall found referring either to the laboratory or his researchers.
Major affiliations include: 1903-1948, successively student, lecturer, and H.O. Wells Professor of Physics at University of Bristol, England. Largely responsible for the creation of the H. W. Wills Physical Laboratory and the high quality of its achievements by Cecil Posell, F.C. Frank, N.F. Mott, and others. Acting vice-chancellor, 1944-1945, FRS, 1933, president of the Institute of Physics, 1946-1948, CBE, 1950. He died in 1961.
