Allis, William P. (William Phelps), 1901-1999
William Allis papers, 1924-1989.
The collection contains course notes and other teaching materials from classes Allis taught in physics at MIT, including Historical Development of Physics (8.471), 1939-1940. Professional correspondence includes technical exchanges about research in plasma physics and gaseous electronics, as well as professional material about scheduling presentations, meetings, and conferences, 1929-1979. Also includes reprints of Allis's writings from 1924 to 1979 on subjects including wave theory, electron scattering, oscillation and distribution, glow discharge, and magnetic minor systems. A recording of speeches given at Allis's retirement party in 1967 includes comments from Howard Johnson and Julius Stratton.
William Phelps Allis, 1901- , S.B. 1923 and S.M. 1924, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sc.D. 1925, University of Nancy (France), was appointed research associate at MIT in 1925. He became assistant professor of physics in 1934, associate professor in 1940, professor in 1950, and emeritus in 1957. During World War II he worked at the MIT Radiation Laboratory, then joined the United States Army where he served in the Liaison Office of the Naval Defense Research Committee. On leave from MIT, 1962-1964, he was assistant secretary-general for scientific affairs for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Allis's research in theoretical physics focused on electrical gases and plasmas. He directed Project Ashby, designed to determine the feasibility of building a fusion engine.
