Kevin M. Tuohy papers, 1897-1959.
This collection presents technical information about contact lenses designed to correct vision problems. It includes manuals, brochures and other material from Solex Laboratories as well as articles, reprints from professional journals and other published sources. There are numerous photographs in color illustrating the techniques of fitting, inserting and removing contact lenses. Medical problems arising from use of contact lenses are discussed and described. Lecture notes and course outlines describing contact lenses are included. Legal briefs presented in suits involving alleged infringements of patents owned by Solex as a result of Tuohy's inventions are also included. A 1958 court decision supporting Solex's position is presented in full. Numerous patents describing devices for correcting vision are included. The information emphasizes the major shift in contact lens technology and the growth in their use that resulted from Tuohy's development of the corneal lens in the 1940s which quickly supplanted the scleral lens which had been used until then. The corneal lens, much smaller and more comfortable to wear, could remain in the eye for many more hours consecutively than could the older lens.
Graduate of La Salle Academy, a parochial high school in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey. In 1945 he became partner at Solex Laboratories, Los Angles, California, and later served as president and was a major stockholder of that company. A victim of polio from early childhood, Tuohy died in 1968 in Los Angeles.
