In 1925 Werner Heisenberg introduced a new way of treating the mechanics of the atom. With colleagues he developed a mathematical system that eventually was able to explain phenomena from the hardness of diamonds to the color of blood. Einstein was impressed, but felt the theory stood on a weak foundation.
