The Acoustical Society of America is a professional society of physicists and engineers in all fields of acoustics: electroacoustics, ultrasonics, architectural acoustics, physiological and psychological acoustics, musical acoustics, noise, vibration control, underwater acoustics, biological response to vibration, and speech communication. Founded in 1929, its purpose is to increase and diffuse the knowledge of acoustics and promote its practical applications. The Society was a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics.
This collection contains items documenting the activities of the Acoustical Society of America, including advocacy for noise pollution reduction, professional correspondence of society officers, and minutes and reports from the bi-annual meetings of the society.
The bulk of the collection is found in Series III, consisting of materials from the bi-annual meetings of the society between 1965 and 2010. These materials include minutes of the executive council, reports from officers such as the Treasurer, Secretary, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (JASA), as well as reports to/from ASA committees. Included in this series also are records of officer meetings that occurred outside the usual bi-annual meetings.
Series I mainly consists of issues of Noise Regulation Reporter (later renamed Noise Regulation Report in 1989), a publication of the Bureau of National Affairs reporting on noise regulation news from around the world, with a focus on North America, and keeping track of relevant US regulations. The series also includes a few other newsletters related to noise control advocacy.
Series II consists entirely of correspondence to/from former ASA Presidents, including references to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Virginia Tech University, Bell Laboratories, Harvard University, Cornell University, University of Texas at Austin Marine Physical Laboratory, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, San Diego State University, IBM, Raytheon, Stanford University, CNRS, and the American Chemical Society.

Series I is organized mostly in chronological order from earliet to latest, with some exceptions to preserve the order in which the records were first found such as the laws and regulations documents (folders 24-31). Series II is organized alphabetically by last name of the primary correspondent. Series III is organized chronologically from earliest to latest.
