Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory was established in 1943 as site Y of the Manhattan Project, with the single purpose of designing and building an atomic bomb. Since then the primary responsibility of the laboratory has been assuring the safety and reliability of the nation's nuclear deterrent. In 1981, the laboratory was renamed Los Alamos National Laboratory.
During peacetime, Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory introduced new programs, including the "Los Alamos University." This was a program of technical lectures given as semi-traditional academic courses to junior laboratory personnel.
This collection includes lecture notes for four courses from the "Los Alamos University" program. The courses include: Nuclear Physics (lectures by: J. H. Manley, Victor Weissokpf, Julian Schwinger, J. R. Zacharias, Bernard T. Feld; notes by: Mac H. Hull, Jr.); Quantum Mechanics (lectures by: Edward Teller, E. Konopinski; notes by: M. E. Wyman, S. Goldberg); Statistical Mechanics (lectures by: L. I. Schiff, E. M. Baroody; notes by: P. R. Stein, I. Halpern ); Electromagnetic Theory (lectures by: H. A. Bethe, R. E. Marshak; notes by: E. D. Klema).
