This collection consists of records spanning the American Institute of Physics (AIP) Executive Director terms of Kenneth W. Ford (1987-1993), Marc H. Brodsky (1993-2007) and H. Frederick Dylla (2007-2015). Within this collection are legal files, records pertaining to the relocation of AIP from New York to Maryland, material regarding the relationship between AIP and its Russian counterparts, and AIP Publishing records.

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is a not-for-profit membership corporation that began in 1931 for the purpose of promoting the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics and its application to human welfare. Its members are leading societies in the fields of physics and astronomy, and its activities include providing services to its member societies in publishing, finance, and education.
Kenneth Ford was born on May 1, 1926 in West Palm Beach, Florida. He earned his B.A. from Harvard University in 1948, and received his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University in 1953. Ford began his professional career as a Research Assistant at Los Alamos, Princeton, and Indiana University (1950-1954), before moving on to a professorship at Indiana University (1954-1958). He was also a professor at Brandeis University (1958-1964), the University of California, Irvine (1964-1970), and the University of Massachusetts (1970-1975). He served as Education Officer for the American Physical Society before accepting his nomination as Director of the American Institute of Physics in 1987.
Marc H. Brodsky served as the Executive Director and CEO of AIP from 1993 to 2007. During his tenure, Brodsky oversaw dramatic changes in AIP publishing and publishing services, as nearly all editorial, production, distribution and business processes were changed to deal with electronic publishing. All the journals and magazines AIP publishes for itself and others went onto the World Wide Web, increasing access to the physics literature to more people than ever before in history. Brodsky also worked to increase AIP Member Society participation in programs of common interest, including free Member Society student memberships for Society of Physics Students undergraduates, funding of the Physics Olympiad U.S. Team, and coordination of many media and government relations activities. He also actively defended AIP's freedom of the press rights on many fronts, including attempted government restrictions on the processing of manuscripts from certain countries and suits from some who tried to restrict knowledge from comparisons of journal prices.
H. Frederick Dylla took over the position of Executive Director and CEO of AIP in 2007. Prior to his role as Executive Director, Dylla served on the AIP Governing Board in the early 1990s and from 2004 to 2007. He was also a member of AIP's Corporate Associates Advisory Committee for many years and hosted the Corporate Associates' Industrial Physics Forum at Jefferson Lab in 2002. He also served as Chair of the Physics Today Advisory Committee and as a member of the Committee on Public Policy. Dylla is a Past President of the AVS: Science & Technology of Materials, Interfaces, and Processing, one of AIP's ten Member Societies, where he was elected a Fellow in 1998 and is currently a distinguished lecturer for the society. He has helped to design imaginative sessions at AVS meetings on the 100th Anniversary of Electronics and Benjamin Franklin's contributions to vacuum sciences and related fields.
