The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is a not-for-profit membership corporation which began in 1931 for the purpose of promoting the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics and its application to human welfare. Its members are leading societies in the fields of physics and astronomy, and its activities include providing services to its member societies in publishing, finance, and education. AIP publishes scientific journals reporting original research in all the principal areas of physics and allied sciences including translation journals and journals on behalf of its member societies. The Publications Division handles this principal responsibility of the AIP.
This collection contains records of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) Publishing Division from the 1990s. The AIP Press records contain information about budget, marketing, sales, and other business matters, correspondence between the employees of AIP Press and other publishers, authors, lawyers, and other employees of AIP, information about specific books being published by the Press in the 1990s, and records of the AIP Press Divestiture, when the AIP Press book list was sold to Springer-Verlag. The translation program records focus largely on the Russian translation program, but also briefly mention Japanese and Mexican materials. There are files on specific journals, files containing contracts and other agreements between AIP Publishing and Russian publishers and other Russian agencies, and general files on the translation program. This collection contains mostly paper records, but there are a few floppy disks in the folders.
