Biographical Note

Physicist (electricity and sound). Research engineer and supervisor, Western Electric Company (1913-1925); research consultant and supervisor, Bell Telephone Laboratories (1925-1950).

Ralph Vinton Lyon Hartley was born in Spruce, Nevada, November 30, 1888. He graduated with an A.B. degree from the University of Utah in 1909, and studied at Oxford for three years as a Rhodes Scholar receiving his B.A. in 1912 and his B.Sc. In 1913. On his return to the U.S. he entered the research laboratory of the Western Electric Company, and was in charge of the early developments of radio receivers for the Bell System's transatlantic radio telephone tests of 1915.

During that work, on February 10, 1915, Hartley discovered the "Hartley oscillating circuit," a vacuum tube oscillator that would be much simpler and more economical than any of its predecessors. During the same period he invented a neutralizing circuit to offset the internal coupling of triodes that tends to cause ringing. The use of this kind of negative feedback to correct undesirable reactions within the tubes of an amplifier took on special significance in light of the almost universal use of more complex feedback circuits in more recent years.

During the first World War, Hartley engaged in research studies mainly on binaural sound-locators. Later, in 1925, Hartley (already well known for his vacuum tube oscillator circuit) became director of a research group at the Bell Laboratories. Here he studied the basic relationship between the width of a frequency band and the capacity of a system to transmit "information." His work followed mathematical studies by his colleague Harry Nyquist concerning the maximum number of symbols that could be transmitted in a given frequency band. Hartley's results, published before the end of the 1920's would become guiding rules for transmission engineers for nearly 20 years; his work giving way to a more comprehensive theory when C.E. Shannon examined the effect of noise on the ability of a system to preserve faithful indications of amplitude. Thus, Nyquist's and Hartley's studies related to a hypothetical noise-free medium, though electrical noise and interference had plagued telephone developments from the beginnings.

In the 1920's, an interesting result was also obtained by Hartley: he invented a circuit, which is an early ancestor of the so called microwave paramp, pointing out that it offered a model to the process of Raman scattering. In this way he anticipated theoretically the discovery of the stimulated Raman laser, which would not be invented until the 1960's. Due to a prolonged illness, Hartley gave up the direction of his group at the Bell Laboratories in 1929. After that, he was engaged chiefly in theoretical studies. However, during World War II, he and Nyquist were two of the major consultants at Bell Laboratories. Hartley was especially interested in a project for a true Secrecy System for Speech, called the X System of Communication. Hartley found the possibilities interesting because they were related to some of his previous work on the transmission of information; he wrote a "memorandum" philosophizing on the various processes in the system. Hartley's theoretical activity is related to a less known aspect of his scientific interests, namely his interest in the foundations of modern theoretical physics, especially from a philosophical point of view. His efforts in this area were almost exclusively devoted to the strenuous effort of defending the classical mechanistic world view against the fatal attacks brought by the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics.

Scope and Contents of Collection

Manuscripts, research notes, correspondence, reprints, and patents of Ralph V. L. Hartley. The manuscripts, research notes, and the majority of the correspondence cover such topics as wave mechanisms, classical electromagnetic theory, a mechanical system of theoretical physics, rotational ethers, McCullagh ethers, and relativistic classical ethers. The collection reflects little of the scientific and technological activity for which Hartley is known. Rather, it deals almost exclusively with Hartley's theoretical research from the later 1920s until his death. The various attempts to defend a classical mechanistic view of physical phenomena and to discard relativity theory and quantum mechanics are well documented, as is his often frustrating effort to find a audience in the official community of physicists and philosophers of science. Correspondents include David Bohm, Louis de Broglie, Charles W. Churchman, Lloyd Espenschied, Samuel A. Goudsmit, Herbert E. Ives, Henry Margeneau, Thomas Marshall, Marvin G. Moore, Harry Nyquist, John T. Tate, and Carl Wiley.
