Biographical Note

This professional society of educators, industrial and government research workers, and students of physics and related fields, was established in 1899 to promote the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics. It was a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics.

Scope and Contents of Collection

This collection consists of the paper records and media items created prior to and during the centennial celebration of the American Physical Society, held during the annual meeting in 1999. The paper records include the administrative files of Lisa Robillard created during the planning stages of the centennial celebration, as well as several hundred videos of the sessions during the week-long meeting held in Atlanta, Georgia on March 20-26, 1999. The paper and computer files include planning documents, steering committee meeting minutes, invitation lists, biographical and reference materials on speakers, releases from speakers, samples of printed documents produced for the centennial including programs, poster, etc. The bulk of the collection is comprised of Beta SP masters and VHS copies of video tape recordings of nearly all of the participants and speakers, including the opening session, plenary sessions, keynote addresses, and Nobel luncheon, as well as the centennial symposia sessions. Most of the symposia have also been reproduced on compact discs, which are also included.
