The American Astronomical Society (AAS) was founded in 1899 as the Astronomical and Astrophysical Society of America. The name was changed in 1914. Its purpose is the advancement of astronomy and closely related branches of science. The Society became an Associate Member of the American Institute of Physics in 1958 and has been a full Member Society since 1966. It is also affiliated with the International Astronomical Union. Arlo Landolt was executive secretary of the AAS from 1980-1989 and again from 1995-2004. John Graham took over the position from 2004 until 2010.
This collection consists of the chronological correspondence files (and a few administrative files) kept by former secretary of the American Astronomical Society (AAS), Arlo Landolt (AAS Secretary 1980-1989 and 1995-2004). The collection was donated by Landolt's successor John A. Graham (AAS Secretary 2004-2010), and may contain some of his correspondence files from the transition of the position.
