Historical Note

The Solar Physics Division of the American Astronomical Society was formed in 1969 to advance the study of the sun and promote the coordination of such research with other branches of science.

Scope and Contents of Collection

These records contain correspondence of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) Solar Physics Division (SPD) concerning the founding and operations of the SPD. The correspondence files also contain attachments which may include meeting materials, reports, memoranda, bylaws, programs, agendas, abstracts of papers, and press releases. The records also contain a series on the George Ellery Hale Prize, which includes nominations and information on the funding of the prize.

Restrictions on Use and Access

Permission of an officer of depositing organization required for access to records less than 50 years old.
