This collection primarily contains manuscripts and reprints of Andrew Gemant's novels, poems, and short stories. Also included are essays, drawings, diaries, and miniature literature of classics dating from the nineteenth century. His career as a physicist and biochemist is documented through reprints of journal articles, correspondence, and research notes.

Andrew Gemant was born in Nagyvarad, Hungary on July 27, 1895. He served in the Austro-Hungarian army as a medical student during the First World War and received his M.D. from the University of Budapest in 1919. During 1920-1922 he attended the University of Berlin and worked in the laboratories of Leonor Michaelis and Herbert Freundlich. He received his Ph.D. in physics in 1922. From 1923-1924 Gemant was a research physicist at Radiologie Inc, an X-ray tube manufacturer in Berlin. From 1925-1931 he was a research physicist at Siemens-Schuckert Cable Company. He held a privat-docent position at the Technical University of Berlin (Technische Universität Berlin) from 1929-1933, and from 1932-1933 he was a researcher at the Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) for Research on Oscillations. In 1933 Gemant was dismissed from his research and teaching positions by the National Socialist (Nazi) government. He and his wife Susi (Sophia Ida Marie), whom he had recently married, subsequently left Germany for England, and from 1934-1937 Gemant was a research associate in the Engineering Laboratory of Oxford University. The Gemants then moved to the United States, where from 1938-1939 he was a research associate in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Wisconsin. From 1940-1960 Gemant was a staff physicist at the Detroit Edison Company. He subsequently held positions as a research associate at Grace Hospital in Detroit, Michigan from 1961-1971 and in Wayne State University's Department of Biochemistry from 1972-1983. He died in February 1983 at the age of 87.
Andrew Gemant performed research in the areas of: X-ray fluorescence; pH of aqueous solutions; high voltage physics; dielectrics; colloids; acoustics; viscosity and internal friction of solids; electrets; electrochemistry of oils; radioactive tracers in solutions; high voltage cables; oxidative and photochemical ions in hydrocarbons; ion-exchange resins in hydrocarbons; solubilization of cholesterol; carcinogenesis; enzymic oxidative degradation of protein in senescence; and the reduction by chemical means of the reactivity of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) toward hydrogen peroxide in order to mitigate symptoms of aging.
The papers of Andrew Gemant are primarily personal in nature and document his artistic endeavors, which include writing novels, poems, short stories, and essays and drawing. His papers also include diaries from his childhood in Hungary and his early years in Germany. Gemants professional career in physics is documented through reprints of his journal articles from the 1920s to the 1960s, professional references and correspondence, and some patents from the 1920s and 1930s, while research notes and journal articles document his work in biochemistry from the 1960s to 1982.
Series I contains Gemant's professional correspondence, patents, book reviews, biochemistry research notes, and reprints of articles from physics and medical journals. The bulk of the professional correspondence dating from the 1920s and 1930s pertain to his research and teaching positions in Berlin, his dismissal from the Technical University of Berlin (Technische Universität Berlin) by the National Socialist (Nazi) government, and his subsequent moves to Oxford, England and the United States. His professional correspondence from the 1950s to the 1980s mostly concern his published books and journal articles. Gemant's research notes and drafts of articles for professional journals were produced during his time as a research associate in biochemistry at Wayne State University.
In Series II are Gemant's diaries, which highlight his childhood in Hungary and include anecdotes from his college days and early teaching career. Other personal documents include his high school and university diplomas and biographical news clippings from the 1960s and 1970s. Photographs include portraits of Gemant and his family in Hungary (1898-1910s), group portraits of Gemant with colleagues at Detroit Edison Company (circa 1940s), and portraits of Gemant at work and at home with his wife Susi (1940s-1960s).
The largest series, Series III, contains manuscripts and reprints of Gemant's published and unpublished novels, poems, short stories, and essays, which constitute the sixteen volumes of his Belletristic Work. Also included are copyright registrations and correspondence concerning the donations of his works to various institutions. His drawings are original pencil sketches and pastels of outdoor scenes, still lifes, and illustrations of his fiction. The folder "Stories in German" (Box 2 Folder 18) also includes photographs of Gemant and colleagues at Oxford University, the Detroit Edison Company, and a conference on electrical innovation (1930s-1940s) and a candid photograph of Gemant and his wife Susi in Oxford, England in 1934.
Series IV contains a scale chart and miniature literature of classics dating from the nineteenth century.
