Emilio Gino Segrè (1905-1989), Italian physicist and Nobel laureate in physics. University of Rome, Ph.D. (physics), 1928, studying under Enrico Fermi. Assistant professor of physics, University of Rome (1932-1936); director of the Physics Laboratory, University of Palermo (1936-1938); research assistant, Berkeley Radiation Lab and lecturer in the physics department, University of California, Berkeley; Los Alamos National Laboratory, group leader for the Manhattan Project (1943-1946); professor of physics and history of science, University of California, Berkeley (1946-1972); University of Rome, professor of nuclear physics (1974- ). Discoverer of the element technicium, co-discoverer of astatine adn the isotope plutonium-239, and co-discoverer, along with Owen Chamberlain, of antiprotons. Segrè was also an active photographer and took many photos documenting events and people in the history of modern science. The American Institute of Physics named its photographic archive of physics history in his honor.
This collection contains audio, film and video recordings of lectures given by and interviews with Emilio Segrè, as well as some informal and/or family recordings. The collection also includes recordings of Emilio Segrè Memorial Lectures, given by physicists such as Wolfgang Panofsky, Hans Bethe, McMillan, Rutherford, and Joseph Taylor.
