The American Center for Physics (ACP) was founded in 1992 to serve as the headquarters facility for three physics-based organizations: The American Institute of Physics, The American Physical Society, and the American Association of Physics Teachers. Later, the American Association of Physicists in Medicine entered into a sublease agreement for office space. ACP is governed by a Board of Directors, made up of six members - including two appointed by each of the three original societies. Prior to purchasing the property in 1992, the Board of Directors existed as the ACP Steering Committee and the ACP Advisory Committee.
The ACP headquarters consists of a 24-acre site and a 120,000 square foot building located in College Park, MD, a short distance from the Washington Metro system and the University of Maryland flagship campus. Financing for the project was provided by State of Maryland tax-exempt revenue bonds. The building includes offices for society staff, and a suite of conference rooms to serve physics based meetings.
Bernard Khoury served as the President and Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Center for Physics from its founding in 1992 until 2007. He also served during this time as the Executive Officer of the American Association of Physics Teachers from 1990 to 2006.
Dr. Khoury has extensive experiences in university administration, academic affairs, academic planning, science and public policy, and physics education. His professional experience before coming to the AAPT includes serving as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Policy and Planning and the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Maryland System, Executive Director for the Graduate Record Examinations Program of the Educational Testing Service, Associate Executive Secretary for the Association of American Universities, and Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies and Research at the University of Maryland.
The bulk of this collection is comprised of files from the monthly meetings of the American Center for Physics (ACP) Board of Directors meetings. These files contain agendas, handouts, correspondence and notes taken by Khoury. In addition to the meeting files, this collection also contains property management proposals for the ACP building from private firms, financial documents, legal files, attorney and tax information; and miscellaneous files.
