The Acoustical Society of America (ASA) is a professional society of physicists and engineers in all fields of acoustics: electroacoustics, ultrasonics, architectural acoustics, physiological and psychological acoustics, musical acoustics, noise, vibration control, underwater acoustics, biological response to vibration, and speech communication. Founded in 1929, its purpose is to increase and diffuse the knowledge of acoustics and promote its practical applications. The Society was a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics. Edward Christopher Wente was born in Denver, Iowa in 1889. He earned a B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) in 1914 and a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1918. He was a research physicist with the Western Electric Company from 1914 to 1925, then worked at Bell Telephone Laboratories from 1925 until 1954.
This collection documents the interests and activities of Edward C. Wente as president of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), and includes correspondence, with attachments such as minutes and financial reports. Topics include membership, papers considered for presentation at ASA meetings or for publication in the JOURNAL OF THE ACOUSTICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA; ASA program, award and nominating committees; as well as correspondence concerning annual meetings and finances.
